Sound the Trumpets
Our Youth Minister, Travis, told us last week about reading that in the synagogue the Jews had set up twelve metal containers that were for specific needs. They were shaped so that the tops had trumpet type openings perhaps similar to containers in some restaurants today where you throw in the coins and they swirl round and round until they finally go into the bottom. The rich Pharisees would throw money in all twelve containers, thus "sounding the trumpets" so that everyone would notice that they had given a lot of money. The poor widow only put her coin in one trumpet and it hardly made any sound at all.
So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
