The hawk in our yard is so beautiful. I guess he's a 'snowbird,' wintering in sunny Florida. Last week he landed in the yard and pulled up a 10-inch long earthworm that he gobbled in one bite. He is over a foot tall, and is so graceful, moving into full flight from the ground.

According to a method of measuring avian "IQ" in terms of their innovation in feeding habits, hawks were named among the most intelligent birds. They are widely reputed to have visual acuity eight times that of a normal human being. They have five times as many photoreceptors in the retina, an exceptional number of nerves connecting these receptors to the brain, and a magnified central portion of the visual field.
